Glacial Acrylic Acid (CAS No. 79-10-7) or 2-propenoic acid is the starting point for all acrylic chemistry. It can be reacted with alcohols to form esters know as acrylates. Acrylic acid and it's esters are used as the components for polymers used in adhesives, coatings, inks, plastics, elastomers, water treatment, personal care, and various other industries. Glacial Acrylic Acid is highly susceptible to dimerization and must be handled with care. If frozen, extreme precaution should be taken to thaw the monomer to prevent a run away polymerization and potential explosion.

Raw material preparation
Take crude acrylic acid aqueous solution as raw material.

Extraction
Add extractant for extraction to separate the aqueous phase from the organic phase. The purpose of this step is to keep the water-soluble impurities in the aqueous phase, while acrylic acid and other oil-soluble impurities are enriched in the organic phase.

Addition of inhibitors
Inhibitors are added to the organic phase to prevent polymerization of acrylic acid during storage and transportation.

Separation of the extractant from the acrylic solution by vacuum distillation.

The Difference Between Glacial Acrylic Acid and Acrylic Acid
Glacial acrylic acid (GAA): Usually refers to high purity acrylic acid, also known as ice crystal grade acrylic acid. This type of acrylic acid is of high purity and is suitable for specific industrial applications such as the production of highly absorbent resins (SAP), polymer electrolytes, functional monomers for polymer polymerization, organic synthesis, water treatments and paper chemicals.
Ordinary acrylic acid: Also known as technical grade acrylic acid, it is an important raw material for organic synthesis and a monomer for synthetic resins. It is a kind of vinyl monomer with very fast polymerization speed, mainly used in the preparation of acrylic resin and so on.

Storage Conditions of Glacial Acrylic Acid
1. Temperature control: Acrylic acid should be stored at temperatures between 14 ~ 30°C. Ideally, storage temperature should be controlled at about 20°C to inhibit dimerization. Above freezing, the lower the temperature, the more polymerization can be avoided.
2. Preventing polymerization: To prevent polymerization of acrylic acid, inhibitors such as 200 ppm hydroquinone monomethyl ether are commonly used. These inhibitors only work at room temperature and in the presence of oxygen, so acrylic acid should not be used in an inert atmosphere.
3. Avoid contamination: Acrylic acid should be kept free of contamination during storage because many substances, such as peroxides, nitrogen-containing compounds and polyvalent metal ions, can initiate polymerization.
4. Periodic inspection: Tanks, piping and portable tanks should be inspected periodically for polymerization. Agglomerates and small particles from polymerization may further initiate polymerization.
5. Prevent corrosion: Acrylic acid is highly corrosive to many metals such as unalloyed steel, copper, brass, etc. When these metals decompose, polyvalent polymerization can occur. Decomposition of these metals can produce polyvalent metal ions that can initiate polymerization reactions. Therefore, these metals should be avoided in the storage and transportation of acrylic.
