What is White Oil
White OilA highly refined petroleum mineral oil consisting of a complex combination of hydrocarbons obtained by fortifying petroleum fractions with sulfuric acid and oleum, or by hydrogenation, or by a combination of hydrogenation and acid treatment. In the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, white oil is used as a base or carrier oil for a variety of products, including creams, lotions, ointments and personal care products. Its non-greasy texture and inertness make it suitable for use in skin moisturizing and protective formulations.
Advantages of White Oil
Versatility
White oil is a versatile substance with a wide range of uses. It can be used as a base or carrier oil in industries such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food processing, and industrial lubricants.
Inertness
White oil is chemically inert, meaning it does not react with other substances. This property makes it suitable for formulations where stability and compatibility are critical, such as pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
Non-toxic and non-irritating
White oil is considered safe for human use and consumption. It is non-toxic and non-irritating to the skin, making it suitable for use in topical or internal products such as baby oils, lotions, and laxatives.
Moisturizing properties
In cosmetics and personal care products, white oil acts as an effective humectant to help moisturize and soften the skin without leaving a greasy residue. It is often used in creams, lotions, and lip balms to improve skin hydration and barrier function.
Fractionation
The process starts with crude oil, which is a mixture of hydrocarbons with different boiling points. Crude oil is heated in a fractionation tower and fractionated to separate into different fractions based on boiling points. White oil is obtained from the fractions that boil within a specific temperature range, usually between 300°C and 400°C.
Hydrofinishing
After hydrodesulfurization, the oil is hydrofinished to further remove impurities such as aromatic hydrocarbons, nitrogen compounds, and olefins. Hydrofinishing helps improve the color, odor, and stability of white oil, making it suitable for a variety of industrial applications. The process involves passing the oil through a catalyst bed at high temperature and pressure to hydrogenate unsaturated hydrocarbons and remove impurities.
Clay Treatment (Bleaching)
The purified oil may be clay treated (also known as bleaching) to further improve its color and remove trace impurities. This process involves mixing the oil with bleaching clay or activated clay and heating it under vacuum to adsorb pigments, oxidation products, and other contaminants. The clay is then filtered out, leaving a clearer, more refined oil.

Hydrodesulfurization (HDS)
The fraction containing white oil undergoes hydrodesulfurization, a process that removes sulfur compounds from the oil. Sulfur compounds can impart unpleasant odors and color to the final product, so removing these compounds is critical to producing high-quality white oil. Hydrodesulfurization is typically performed under high temperature and pressure in the presence of hydrogen and a catalyst such as cobalt molybdenum or nickel molybdenum.
Solvent Extraction
In some cases, solvent extraction can be used to further remove impurities from the oil. Solvent extraction involves mixing the oil with a solvent such as propane or butane to selectively dissolve and remove impurities such as aromatic hydrocarbons, waxes, and polar compounds. The solvent is then separated from the purified oil using distillation or other separation techniques.
Deodorization
The final step in the refining process is deodorization, which is the removal of residual odors and volatile compounds from the oil. Deodorization is typically performed under high temperature and vacuum conditions to evaporate and remove volatile components such as aldehydes, ketones, and sulfur compounds. The deodorized oil is then cooled and filtered to remove any remaining impurities.
Applications of White Oil
Cosmetics: In cosmetics, white oil can be used in baby oils, creams and lotions, sunscreens, makeup removers, hair care products, bath oils, etc.
Pharmaceuticals: White oil also has a variety of uses in the pharmaceutical field and can be used as an ingredient in topical ointments and capsule ointments.
Food industry: In the food industry, the product can be used in egg coatings, fruit and vegetable coatings, and food packaging materials.
Lubricants: White oil also plays a key role in the production of plastics and elastomers, such as: polystyrene internal lubricants, polystyrene internal lubricants, PVC external lubricants, plastic annealing, and catalyst carriers.
Industrial machinery: White oil is widely used as a lubricant for industrial machinery and equipment, including bearings, gears, chains, compressors, pumps, and hydraulic systems.
Metalworking and machining: White oil is used as a lubricant and cutting fluid in metalworking and machining operations, including cutting, drilling, milling, and grinding.
Pesticides: White oil is used as an insecticide and acaricide to control a variety of pests on crops, ornamental plants and trees.
Precautions for use
Skin contact
Wash affected area with soap and water. If irritation persists, seek medical attention.
Eye contact
Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation persists, seek medical attention.
Ingestion
If large amounts are swallowed, seek medical attention. Do not induce vomiting.
Fire extinguishing media
Use water spray, foam, dry powder or carbon dioxide (as appropriate) to extinguish surrounding fire.
Firefighting instructions
Wear protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus. Use water to cool containers exposed to fire.
Temperature control
White oil should be stored at room temperature, preferably in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, heat sources and ignition hazards.
How to pack and ship
Packaging
For large-scale use, white oil is packaged in barrels or cans, which can hold 200 liters or more. These containers are usually metal drums, plastic drums, or large reusable containers that can be transported without leakage.
Transportation
White oil is mainly transported by road in tank trucks and sometimes by rail. The temperature during storage and transportation is ambient.
For long-distance transportation and international shipping, white oil can be transported in ISO tanks (also known as intermodal containers).
For international transportation and bulk cargoes, white oil can be transported by sea using tankers or bulk carriers.
